Does the border increase the image dimensions?+

No. It is drawn inside the output canvas, preserving the selected square dimensions.

Why does a thin border disappear at 16 px?+

Small details can become subpixel lines during resizing. Increase the width or simplify the design until the 16 px preview is clear.
